R2 PRT: Green Pharmacy - Wording/action:
(13) APhA-ASP proposes that the practice of pharmacy be carried out under environmentally conscious conditions, unless such conditions would be detrimental to the health and safety of patients. This includes but is not limited to the use of renewable resources, the practices of recycling, proper storage and disposal of harmful substances, and the use of energy efficient practices and procedures.

Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:

Due to the limited quantities of resources on Earth, measures should be taken to prevent waste and promote the best use of raw materials. QProper storage and disposal of harmful substances helps to prevent the risk of exposure related morbidity and mortality. Energy efficiency helps to reduce overhead costs, while promoting a healthy outlook for health and wellbeing of future generations. Pharmacists are role models in the community, and their support of green policies may persuade others. Some initiatives may cost more initially, but the future benefit outweighs the current monetary cost.
