R2 PRT: Third party formulary – Wording/action:
(31) APhA-ASP encourages third party providers to promote continuity of care by limiting changes made to their formularies.

Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:

Prescription drug plans are frequently modified during a patient’s course of therapy, such that a patient may take different drugs from the same therapeutic class within a short period of time. Changes in formularies often reflect ongoing trends in the cost of prescription medications; however they are at the sacrifice of a patient’s well being. Drugs that are used interchangeably when coverage is changed are not necessarily equivalent, though insurers force healthcare providers to make these modifications to a patient’s therapy for the sole purpose of affordability to the patient.
