R2 PRT: Immunization training for student pharmacists – Wording/action:
(9) APhA-ASP supports the implementation of immunization training for student pharmacists into pharmacy school curriculum.
Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:
Pros:
- This would better equip future pharmacists to assist in immunizations in their communities following graduation. Immunization by pharmacists is legal in 46 states; therefore a large number of pharmacists are needed with this skill. It would be beneficial to prepare future pharmacists to carry on this great service to their patients. All graduating pharmacists would be on equal ground and be prepared to achieve their certification in immunization. Student pharmacists who have been trained in school would be more confident in their abilities once they must apply them in everyday life.
Cons:
- It may be difficult to fit this into the curriculum depending on the school. Also, some students may not have any interest in immunization, although all students should be willing to learn and apply this service to their patients.
