R2 PRT: Student/Pharmacist Recruitment – Wording/action:
(38) APhA-ASP supports pharmacists and student pharmacists to provide knowledge of the profession of pharmacy to any student who is ambivalent about their future career in the effort to stifle our growing shortage of pharmacists.
Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:
Pharmacy is a profession that is not always well understood by the public. By educating students (especially at the high school and undergraduate level), the public will understand our many roles in the community.
Hopefully these “high school day”/”career day” initiatives will spark interest and motivate individuals to enter the profession.
Pro:
• The public will be better educated about the role of the pharmacist in their healthcare
• More students will be able to make informed decision about entering pharmacy school and ultimately the profession of pharmacy
• Increase the number of PharmD candidates, and ultimately pharmacists
Con:
• Pharmacy school will become more competitive
