R2 PRT: Curriculum “Non-traditional aspects of Pharmacy” – Wording/action:
(36) APhA-ASP advocates that all schools/colleges of pharmacy mandate seminars into their curriculum that provide a well-rounded perspective on the different aspects and fields of pharmacy.
Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:
Pharmacy is a broad profession with many specialties and applications in healthcare and other fields. Often, PharmD candidates never get the opportunity to hear from pharmacists who practice in the unconventional fields such as oncology, managed care, toxicology, etc. Schools of pharmacy should provide their students with a platform to understand these practices.
Pro:
• PharmD candidates will be able to make very informed decisions about their career paths in pharmacy
• Students will be introduced to specialty practice areas in pharmacy and will have more opportunities when choosing a future career path.
• Professionals of pharmacy will have a platform to reach several students at one time
Con:
• These seminars should not become merely a recruiting opportunity
