R2 PRT: Schedule II Prescriptions - Wording/action:
(20) 2008.6 APhA-ASP encourages the establishment of an expiration date for schedule II controlled prescriptions.
Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:
Since schedule II drugs have the greatest potential of being abused, we feel that an expiration date will force patients to have their prescriptions filled at the appropriate time. Although some states follow more stringent laws, which include a CII prescription expiration date, the establishment of a national CII prescription expiration date would govern all states. While patients could not receive maintenance prescriptions far in advance, this is not necessarily a bad thing because patients should communicate with his/her physician every time the medication is being filled anyway.
