R2 PRT: Pharmacist’s Breaks - Wording/action:
(18) 2008.4 APhA-ASP encourages guaranteed breaks for pharmacists and their staff.
Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:
When a person is overworked, mistakes are more likely to occur. For this reason, pharmacists and staff should be given an appropriate break when they work a certain amount of hours. A break would allow the pharmacist and staff time to refresh their minds. During this break, patients would not be able to pick up prescriptions due to OBRA ’90 and schedule II drugs would need to be securely locked. However, closing the pharmacy for a short amount of time would be beneficial to the pharmacist’s wellbeing.
