R2 PRT: Behind-the-counter Medications - Wording/action:
(17) 2008.3 APhA-ASP supports the idea of behind-the-counter medications as a category.
Reasons for the Action(s) / Pros and Cons:
Behind-the-counter medications would allow uninsured patients to receive the medications they need without paying to see a doctor to get a prescription. Although this puts more responsibility on the pharmacist, the pharmacist has the knowledge to make decisions about maintenance medication dosing and would be able to make educated decisions regarding the patient’s therapy.
Although a similar resolution exists, 1984.2 Reclassification of Drugs, we feel it is old enough to warrant reconsideration and renewed attention.
